About

Holistic Wellness & Psychiatry is an integrative psychiatry practice in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, that offers ketamine therapy alongside conventional psychiatry, counselling and functional medicine. Its ketamine service covers IV infusions, intramuscular injections and the Spravato nasal spray.

Approach

Founder Dr. Laurie McCormick is a board-certified psychiatrist and family physician, in practice since 2003 and certified in functional medicine. She holds the title of Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and lectures on psychedelic-assisted therapy. The practice says it weighs genetics, environment, lifestyle and lived experience before choosing a plan with each patient. Every ketamine patient is strongly encouraged to be in therapy too, and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy pairs the medicine with dedicated sessions.

Who it is for

The practice sees adults, teens and families for mood and anxiety conditions, trauma, ADHD, OCD, eating disorders and grief. It considers ketamine for adults whose depression has resisted treatment, or who live with severe anxiety, PTSD or OCD, when standard medication and talk therapy have not helped.

Practical details

The clinic is at 42 7th Ave SW in Cedar Rapids and opens on weekdays from 9am to 5pm; a second clinic operates in St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. IV and intramuscular sessions take 45 minutes to an hour, Spravato sessions two hours, and patients need a ride home afterwards. A single IV treatment costs $500 and a series of six costs $2,800. Most commercial insurers do not cover ketamine, while Spravato often is covered. A free 15-minute consultation is available.

Care and safety

A full evaluation comes before any ketamine treatment. During a session a medical clinician monitors vital signs, and the infusion can be slowed or stopped at any time. In Cedar Rapids, Dr. McCormick works with psychiatric nurse practitioners and a physician assistant, and therapy is given by licensed social workers and mental health counsellors.
