Joney Poon, MA, RCC

Joney Poon is a registered clinical counsellor in Vancouver and the owner of Rain or Shine Therapy, where she offers psychedelic integration and psychedelic-assisted therapy alongside counselling. She is also an accredited music therapist and a clinical hypnotherapist.

Approach

Poon pairs mindfulness-based counselling with clinical hypnotherapy, music therapy, somatic work, EMDR and parts work. She describes herself as a queer woman of colour, mainly of Chinese descent, and brings awareness of culture and intersecting identities into her sessions. She also uses the NeuroVIZR, a device that works with light and sound, as a way to explore altered states without psychedelics. Beyond one-to-one work she leads workshops, sound baths and forest retreats.

Who it is for

She sees clients of all ages for anxiety and low mood, trauma and grief, anger, sleep and jet lag, self-esteem, creative blocks and boundaries. Her group work includes sessions for children and families, and she presents the NeuroVIZR as suited to people with autism, ADHD or other neurodivergent conditions.

Practical details

Sessions take place at 4187 W 10th Ave in Vancouver, by video or by phone, on weekdays, with weekend times on request. Fees are listed at $150 to $180 an hour, and extended health plans may cover part of the cost. Cancelling with less than 24 hours’ notice means paying the full fee. A free phone consultation comes first.

Care and safety

Psychedelic work starts with one or two intake sessions covering psychological and medical history, support systems and goals, along with intake and consent forms. Preparation follows, with tools such as breathwork and mindfulness, before a guided session in which trained therapists stay with the client. At least three integration sessions are encouraged afterwards, and care can be coordinated with the client’s other practitioners.
