Catherine Auman, LMFT

Catherine Auman is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Los Angeles who works across traditional and transpersonal psychology. Besides psychotherapy she offers psychedelic preparation and integration, relationship counselling and tantra coaching, at her office or by phone and Zoom.

Approach

Auman earned an MA in psychology from Antioch University in 1983 and has been licensed since 1993. She has directed behavioural health services at the Alpha Recovery Center, Glendale Memorial Hospital and Redlands Community Hospital, founded The Transpersonal Center in 2006 and taught at three universities. She is a certified master practitioner of NLP, a CAMFT Certified Supervisor and an AAMFT Clinical Fellow, and is enrolled in the transpersonal psychology doctorate at the California Institute of Integral Studies. For couples she draws on the Gottman method, Imago and Passionate Marriage, and on a year of tantra study at the Osho ashram in India. She has written nine books, including Shortcuts to Mindfulness.

Who it is for

Her site speaks to people for whom spiritual search is central and who want a therapist open to altered states. She also sees couples and individuals, and consults with other therapists. On psychedelics, she says they may harm rather than help someone who is not emotionally or mentally stable.

Sessions cost $300, at her office or by phone or Zoom from anywhere in the world. A free 15-minute exploratory call on Zoom comes first. Her online courses and workshops cover tantra, relationships and psychedelics.

Care and safety

Psychedelic work begins with a full psychological assessment of whether psychedelics are a good idea at all, and she discusses options only if the person seems stable. Because psychedelic use is still illegal, her sessions take place before an experience, on intentions and concerns, and afterwards, to carry what was learned into daily life.
