Mexico Psychedelic

Mexico Psychedelic offers one-to-one psilocybin mushroom ceremonies on a donation basis in southern Mexico. Ceremonies were once held in Puerto Vallarta; the practice now works from Puerto Escondido and Mazunte, Oaxaca, and from New York City, and also runs a few private retreats.

Approach

Director Río Hondo left a corporate technology job in New York to live in Oaxaca near Mazatec and Zapotec healing communities, from which he says he received blessings, one of them from the family of María Sabina. He also studied under a Shipibo maestro in Peru. He reports more than 18 years of working with psychedelics and ceremonies with over 200 people, and his team is trained in yoga, breathwork and nutrition. The team grows its own mushrooms. A ceremony starts around 11am with grounding, breathing exercises and a cacao ceremony. The dose depends on intention, past experience and body size, and the session lasts four to seven hours under an eye mask and headphones with a prepared playlist, followed by an hour of debriefing.

Practical details

Ceremonies run on donations rather than fixed fees, to keep them affordable, and 10% of donations go to communities in Oaxaca, to plant medicine sustainability and to Indigenous reciprocity. Guests are asked to keep the ceremony day and the day after free. The latest dates on the website are for February and March 2025, and a ceremony can be cancelled for a full refund.

Care and safety

Applicants send a form with medical information and, if accepted, have a free one-hour call about intentions, expectations, health and the practice’s code of ethics before a date is set. A facilitator stays for the whole session, and there are two one-to-one integration meetings, one right after the ceremony and one a couple of weeks later, plus an online community call.
